This affects not only women, and girls\u2019s rights, as gender equality is needed to achieve a more just and sustainable society for all people. Fair and sustainable global development depends on equality between women and men, girls and boys\n\nPoverty affects the lives of both women and men, but it hits women and girls hardest. To reduce poverty, society\u2019s resources need to be redistributed more fairly from a gender perspective. Only when women have equal access to education, health care, opportunities to earn a living and participate in decision-making \u2013 both in the home and politically \u2013 will world poverty decrease\n\nThe cooperation with government and development partners is central to SGW\u2019s work for increased gender equality. Women and girls are particularly affected in crises, wars and\nconflicts. Men and boys are also victims. Violence is increasingly digitalised.\n\nGender-based violence includes:\n<br>\n<b>1. Domestic violence: <\/b>physical, sexual, psychological or economic violence or the threat of violence.\n<br>\n<b>2. Sexual violence: <\/b>sexual exploitation, abuse and sexual harassment.\n<br>\n<b>3. Human trafficking for sexual purposes<\/b>\n<br>\n<b>4. Child and forced marriages<\/b>\n<br>\n<b>5. Honour-based violence and oppression<\/b>\n<br> \n<b>Female genital mutilation<\/b>\n<br>\n\nTo effectively combat gender-based violence, it\nis crucial to use knowledge of the situation where the violence occurs. SGW\nworks with civil society organizations to combat gender-based violence. In Samburu County, SGW\nhas contributed to a plan to eradicate female genital mutilation and to the\nprovision of care and counselling for thousands of girls who have been\nsubjected to it. An estimated 1,000 girls have escaped genital mutilation\nthanks to active monitoring of girls at risk. Nearly three thousand people in\nthe region have been engaged and actively opposed to female genital mutilation.\n\nFewer child marriages\n\nOne in five girls in the county are married off\nbefore the age of 16. SGW collaborates with community champions in advocating\nfor reduction of child marriage. SGW organises youth groups and engages fathers\nin gender equality work.<br>\nMen and boys also benefit from a more equal world\n\nIf women and men are to have the same power and\nopportunities to shape their lives, men need to be committed to gender\nequality.
